CHAPTER EIGHT

“I’m just saying, a lot of people don’t think a year is very long, you know, but what you do in 365 days can have major consequences for the rest of your life,” I said as I struggled to open my apartment door.

Dean laughed and wrapped his arms around me from behind, kissing my neck. “How many drinks did you end up having, my love?”

Chills ran down my spine at the upgrade from princess.

So I leaned back, offering more of my skin, and answered with 100-percent accuracy: “I don’t remember.”

I’d lost count sometime after the firepit and before we’d made out under the mistletoe.

He slipped my keys in my coat pocket and opened the door. “It helps to turn it right-side up.”

I scoffed. “Wow, so you know everything about keys.”

He flopped down on my couch with a dramatic groan. “I am so tired.”

“Why don’t we make some coffee,” I said, flicking on all the lights in the kitchen and fumbling around in my cabinet for his French press.

Except he’d taken it back to his place and had forgotten to bring it back.

“Did you know that you have two French presses in your place at this exact second?”

He shrugged in response.

I decided to try a more direct approach, “So what I was saying earlier was that a year actually can be a long measurement of time. So it’s significant.”

In the Uber back to my place, I’d picked back up on my year-end accounting spiel. I wanted Dean to see that I also didn’t always love my job and then he’d chime in that he didn’t either, and we’d get back on the same page.

I kept expecting him to weigh in, but he didn’t seem to grasp what I was saying.

“Yeah, a year, ten years, what’s the difference.”

“Nine years.”

He laughed. “Well, duh, I can do basic math, Skye.”

“But do you want to do basic math with me?”

“Is that a euphemism? You know, our whole thing started because of a science joke. Constant and variables, do you remember that? That feels like so long ago, but I still see that parking lot every day.”

“Does it? How long exactly?”

He didn’t answer immediately, so I ripped open a bag of coffee while I waited. He’d restocked his place, but I must’ve forgotten to pick more up for here so I was staring at just enough for one cup.

I didn’t have the energy to hold back my frustrated groan.

“Do you think it’s cold in here?” Dean asked, grabbing a shabby blanket that I hated because the ones I preferred were at his place, and checked my thermostat. “Skye, you didn’t have the heat on. Do you want me to set it to automatic—”

“Sure. It’s like that because, like, why run the heat for an apartment my dad helps me pay for when I’m never here?”

The silence that followed made the sound of my pounding heart all that much louder in my ears.

For someone who noticed every detail, Dean certainly seemed to overlook every one in my apartment that said I basically, very unofficially already lived with him.
